When using VG-420 Rust Converter it is important to keep in mind that the product will only work on severe rust (scaly, flaky, pitted), it needs the rust to react with. It will not work on light flash or surface rust. Any product that gets on painted or clean steel parts will need to be cleaned off with a wet towel before applying a top coat of undercoating.
All loose or scale rust should be removed prior to application of VG-420, this includes any rust dust. Always make sure the area to be treated is free from any grease or oil. Grease, oils and any solvent based products will interfere with the conversion process. It does not perform well on galvanized metal, Stainless or Aluminum.
Use sparingly, most applications will only require 1 coat of VG-420 Rust Converter if applied correctly, a second coat may be applied for heavy rust (two thin coats are more beneficial than one heavy coat). The product can be applied using a brush or a spray type misting bottle. The converter will turn a purplish to black color when conversion is complete, however that will depend on the type and amount of rust you are converting.
VG-420 Rust Converter is temperature and humidity sensitive. You should always apply to steel with a surface temperature between 50°f - 80°f. It will dry to the touch in as little as 30 minutes but may take an hour or more to dry completely. Always check to make sure the coating is completely dry before top coating. Blot or wipe off any puddling or excess product. The longer you can wait to top coat the better.
Do not thin or dilute VG-420 Rust Converter with any water or solvents. Always mix or shake the product before each use.
